A 3-9X40 would be the optimum choice..... Any more powerful and the scope would see beyond the capabilitys of the rifle..... The .17HMR is an accurate cartridge but I would use long range rather loosely when refering to it.... Its a good and accurate round up to 150 yards, maybe 200 on a good day...... It is affected by the wind quite a bit.... If its breezy or windy the .17 has a tendency to move off target in as little as 100 yards....... Consider the Nikon Scopes ---- I use those on all my Ruger rifles and they have given me excellent results....... See the link below. Theres an informative video there also......

Look for the sweet 17 by BSA.

That is the perfect scope for any .17hmr.

Horrible advice
1. The 17hmr is way too accurate to target shoot with 4x
2. Any BSA product is not worth even looking at in the store let alone bringing a second one home. You have found that out first hand already so don't make the same mistake twice. If you must have a 17calibrated scope go with the Cabelas series --- but I see no reason at all why you need one.

I've got a 4x14x40 Tasco World Class on my Marlin 917. It's an alright scope for the price but starts to blur about 12x. For 70 dollars at the time, it was a no brainer. With the 17hmr being a short to medium range rifle, you may not need more zoom but rather just a clearer scope.

The Mueller brand is suppost to be very good and within your price
For general purposes, I'd be looking at the 4.5x14x40 which is 17.5oz
For true long range use you can use the 8.5x25x50 which is 22oz

you shouldnt need anything more than a fixed 4x on a 17. The 6-18 is WAY to much. seriously.
